I hope this is the right place to post this. I am designing a small castle for a story I'm writing. The castle is named Redbridge because it was built beside/with a bridge across a river. Here's the basic idea I was working with:
On the eastshore of the river, a towered gate stands astride the bridge. It is connected by a thirty-foot thick wall to the castle itself. Atop this wall (approx. 80 feet high) is a covered walkway, leading directly into another tower--one of two on either side of the main gate of the castle. Thus, the road across the bridge goes directly by the main gate.
Within the main gate is a rectangular courtyard with a tower at each corner. The courtyard is approximately 300 ft X 175 ft. On the western side of the courtyard is a rectangular tower which serves as the main keep--approximately 200 ft by 175 ft. The corner towers are each two stories in height, with the main keep twice that. Also, the keep reaches past the river's edge.
Does this make sense, do you think? Any questions, suggestions, etc.?

Zahir al-Daoud This is a novella, the first story set in a fantasy universe I've been designing for several years now. I've had plays produced before now, but this is my first foray into original fiction (as opposed to fanfic, which I've found a nice practice ground for prose-writing).
After doing some more research, I should also mention some changes made to the basic design:
--The main keep is five stories tall, and fully 300 feet long.
--In "look" I was imagining a castle that rather resembles one of those from Romania.
--But I should also mention the entire bridge, its towered gate, the connecting wall and a portion of the southern keep are all stained blood-red. The main keep is white-washed in an attempt to hide this (which is only partially successfull as the stain is magical in nature).
--I was thinking a slightly lower outer wall would connect the corner towers and keep, as well as the regular inner wall. This castle, although small, could be expected to endure very many small attacks over a long period of time.
Comments? Questions? Suggestions?
